On 2 July, the European Commission has put forward the Quantum Strategy to make Europe a global leader in quantum by 2030.
With a focus on five key areas, the strategy aims to unlock the future of quantum technologies:
- Research and innovation
- Quantum infrastructures
- Ecosystem strengthening
- Space and dual-use technologies
- Quantum skills
The main goals of the strategy are to turn research into market-ready applications, enhance technological sovereignty and security, and maintain Europe’s scientific leadership.
The strategy includes a range of ambitious initiatives designed to accelerate Europe’s quantum capabilities. These include, among others, the launch of the Quantum Europe Research and Innovation Initiative — a joint effort between the EU and Member States to support cutting-edge research.
The QuantERA Consortium strongly supported the development of the EU Quantum Strategy and advocated for its continued inclusion in the Strategy and the proposed EU R&I platform. Since 2016, QuantERA has brought together national and regional funding efforts across Europe, becoming a cornerstone of quantum research collaboration on the continent. In light of the EU Quantum Strategy’s priorities – to align R&D, bridge the lab-to-fab gap, and nurture talent – QuantERA also remains the most effective, inclusive, and proven instrument.
