Shaping a responsible and inclusive quantum future

QuantERA raises awareness on Responsible Research & Innovation

Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is an approach used to describe scientific research and technological development processes that considers the effects and potential impacts on the environment and society. In QuantERA, a strong focus is placed on the following dimensions:

  • Inclusive research cultures, with particular attention to gender equality and equity, support for early-career researchers, and capacity building in less research-performing countries;
  • Open and transparent science, including accessible publishing and data-sharing infrastructures — balanced with responsible management of sensitive information and awareness of research security risks inherent in quantum technologies;
  • Anticipation and reflection on the ethical, social, and security implications of quantum technologies
  • Reaching the general public and fostering a shared understanding of quantum technologies, which is essential, given their transformative and innovative potential.

QuantERA raises awareness of RRI issues in Quantum Technologies (QT) by developing a framework for addressing their implications. As an emerging field, QT faces considerable uncertainty regarding its impacts and must still undergo the social and regulatory development that other ground-breaking areas of science and technology have already experienced.
